Engine No. 148 is a 4-6-2 type steam locomotive and is over 100 years old! 4-6-2 represents the wheel arrangement of four leading wheels on two axles, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles, and two trailing wheels on one axle. She holds 7,300 gallons of water to make steam and 3,500 gallons of fuel - and that fuel is vegetable oil! It was manufactured in April 1920 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Richmond, Virginia, for use by the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). The FEC operated the famous “Overseas Railroad,” a 128-mile extension that it built between 1905 and 1912 to connect Miami to Key West. This route was home to passenger and freight operations and No. 148 hauled trains across this line. US Sugar re-acquired her in 2016 and began a multi-year refurbishment. Today #148 is a fully functioning steam locomotive. There are very few of these classics in working order.
